A big part of this is earthquake strengthening. This involves upgrading the building’s % of structural earthquake strength relative to the New Building Standard (%NBS). An Earthquake-prone building will have an NBS of less than 33% which implies a high level of building damage. Strengthening the structural components of the building is usually done when a tenant has moved out of the property, therefore once complete it meets the NBS %.
